In Fall 2023 I developed and taught a 10 week visual art portfolio course at in the Artward Bound program at my alma mater, Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Artward Bound is a free college prep program that supports high school students from Boston Public Schools and beyond in their artistic and academic development as they build a visual art portfolio in preparation for college applications.

REFLECTIONS

Acrylic painting by student, Tam N.

I developed and taught a portfolio class for 3rd & 4th year high school students focused on building technical artistic skills like observational drawing and color theory, and practicing studio habits and behaviors including peer critique. This cohort of young artists demonstrated both passion and dedication to their craft, managed their busy schedules to attend class twice a week, created thoughtful artworks, and supported their classmates along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and learning from these young artists and am excited to continue to engage with the Artward Bound program! Enjoy images of student-made artwork.

Final presentation by student, Cam A.

Thanks to a recommendation from a friend, I recently read The Portfolio Life and found Christina Wallace’s perspective of having a non-linear and multi-faceted career super validating! I have worn many hats in my past decade of work, so why stop now?
